Comprehensive Analysis of Cancer Epidemiology in the Maldives (2015-2020)
This research aims to provide an in-depth analysis of cancer epidemiology in the Maldives from 2015 to 2020. By examining incidence, prevalence, mortality rates, and risk factors, the study will offer a comprehensive understanding of the cancer burden in the country.
Background: Cancer is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, including in the Maldives. However, there is limited data on the specific epidemiological patterns of cancer in the Maldives. This research seeks to fill this critical gap, offering valuable insights that will inform public health strategies, early detection programs, and policy-making aimed at improving cancer prevention and control.
Methodology: The study will analyze data from national health records, cancer registries, and population-based surveys. Key areas of focus include:
Expected Outcomes: The research will produce a detailed epidemiological profile of cancer in the Maldives, identifying trends and high-risk groups. The findings will support the development of targeted public health strategies and policies, enhancing early detection, prevention, and treatment efforts. This will ultimately contribute to reducing the cancer burden and improving health outcomes in the Maldives.
Significance: By providing comprehensive and up-to-date data on cancer epidemiology, this study will serve as a crucial resource for health professionals, policymakers, and researchers. The insights gained will be instrumental in shaping effective cancer control programs and policies, ensuring a strategic approach to combatting cancer in the Maldives.
Public views on tobacco law enforcement
Our research also seeks to explore public knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions regarding tobacco law enforcement. By understanding how the community views these regulations, we aim to enhance public support for tobacco control measures. The findings from this research will help us design more effective educational campaigns and enforcement strategies, contributing to a healthier environment for all.

Tobacco Compliance Study
Our ongoing observational study aims to assess compliance with tobacco laws across the Maldives. By meticulously monitoring and documenting adherence to these regulations, we seek to understand the effectiveness of current policies and identify areas for improvement. The results of this study will provide valuable insights into tobacco use trends and enforcement success, guiding future initiatives to reduce smoking rates and enhance public health.
Join us in our commitment to a healthier, smoke-free Maldives.
Retailers' view
Through our research, we also wish to better understand the knowledge, attitude, and perception of retailers regarding the tobacco law and its implementation in the Maldives. For the first time, our initiative will attempt to conduct a structured discussion around the theme with the retail community, who can positively or negatively influence tobacco control. It is expected to provide directions as to where awareness and implementations are lacking or are inappropriate. Information gained will eventually help develop targeted programs and enforcement strategies. This would be crucial for a successful working relationship with the retail community to further narrow down tobacco use.
Despite being a relatively small island nation, the Maldives faces significant challenges in cancer control. Studies highlight the high prevalence of certain types of cancer and the critical gaps in cancer awareness, early detection, and treatment infrastructure. We aim to present a comprehensive overview of these challenges and propose actionable recommendations for improving cancer control in the Maldives.
Understanding cancer epidemiology is crucial for developing effective public health interventions. Epidemiology helps in identifying the distribution, determinants, and deterrents of cancer within populations. This knowledge enables health policymakers and practitioners to devise targeted strategies for cancer prevention, early detection, and treatment, ultimately reducing the incidence and improving the survival rates of this disease.
Cancer remains one of the most significant health challenges globally, affecting millions of individuals each year. It is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, with approximately 18 million new cases and 9.5 million cancer-related deaths reported in 2018 alone (Mattiuzzi & Lippi, 2019). The burden of cancer is substantial, not only in terms of health but also in its socio-economic impact, placing a considerable strain on healthcare systems and economies.
